When my father fired me from our sinking San Francisco magazine for trying to make him keep a deadline, I swore I was done with him for good. But two decades later, as the Gonzo editor was dying, I helped edit his last book and planned his Big Fat Catholic Funeral, including rounding up a Ten Priester for the altar just like he always wanted. When he died, I raced to pull of one of the city’s biggest funerals in just three days, before his long-suffering partner could make good on her threat to have him cremated and run off with his ashes to Ireland. Each step of the funeral planning triggers tragicomic memories of our complex past of drinking, writing, and betrayal that explore the legacy I had to move beyond to trust love and find my own voice.
